Paul invites Jim from the Goodlettsville office onto the show, and the two get into a conversation about strategies for paying yourself in retirement. Jim brings up a very popular pitch people hear as they near retirement: moving your money into short, medium, and long-term “buckets” that allow your income to be engaged in various levels of risk based on how long it will be before you need the money. While this sounds like a solid plan, it really becomes an opportunity to engage in more than one plan at a time, introduces new risk into your portfolio, and gives advisors opportunities to sell products like annuities. Later in the episode, Paul and Jim talk about an article that claims that because traditional concepts like retiring at 65 years old are no longer held, other concepts, like the 4% rule, don’t apply either.
